General Update

Hi everybody! An update here, 'cos I haven't been on for a while. I purchased the excellent Audiosurf, which has turned out to be addictive as I thought it would be. Dragon Force through fire and flames the hardest difficulty is awesome. I'm trying Crysis again, as one of my gaming pals has passed on some help to me. A review of Audiosurf will be up soon, so come back soon!

Film Review: One Missed Call

So last night I watched 'One missed call', mainly because it had one of my favourite actors in it, Ed Burns (Saving Private Ryan, River King). Turned out it was a mediocre horror/thriller. It's a generic spooky film, with characters getting killed in weird circumstances caused by a demon wanting revenge on blah blah blah. Extremely generic.

The lead actor is unbelievable and I didn't really care for her, so when it comes to her alone in a burnt down hospital inhabited by weird spirits etc, I was slightly bored.

The direction is average with the standard double-takes where a person is there as a character walks by, and when the character looks back, the person is gone. The scenes which are meant to scare the audience are completely predictable, and in one case had me burst out laughing at the poor demise of a cat. Not the expected reaction, I guess.

And the ending was appalling. It was absolutely unsatisfactory, and not in the way There Will Be Blood was. In TWBB, the film was amazing, but the ending didn't exactly fit with the film and satisfy the audience, but at least 90% of it was amazing. One Missed Call's ending was just plain atrocious. I sat through more than an hour of mediocrity for at least a half-decent ending, and I get an ending that basically says 'the characters achieved nothing whatsoever'.

So, uh, not the best. 4/10.

On a brighter note, I got some more disco music, the theme to Ghostbusters and Never Gonna Give You up. If any of you dear readers want to meet me, my Steam account is 'Wigmore', my xfire is 'llama258' and my BF2142 is 'Avengerofdoom'. All terrible names, I know. Ah well.

General Update

Hey everybody! I got a link on Worm Brain, and if I've put a link to WB on the Links page. Another song added to my music roster - 'Sunny' by Boney M. It was in CJ7, and I followed it up. I've been playing some BF2142 and Crysis. After my initial disappointment at Crysis' terrible gameplay, I'm ready to give it another go. Nice graphics, though.

Film Review: CJ7

I'm a big fan of foreign films. While I pretty much know what's going to happen in every British, American and Australian film, films from China and Japan confuse me. In a good way. They always present different thoughts and morals to a Western mind. CJ7, for example, has an extremely odd sense of humour and direction, but I found it extremely enjoyable.

The plot is of a young, poor boy called Dicky Chow who is bullied and mocked   at his school and pressured at home by a father with high expectations. The father, while looking through a dump for a new pair of shoes, finds a strange green orb. He brings it home to Dicky, who activates it, releasing an intergalactic space puppy.

A note here: this film is suitable for children, but by no means does that mean that adults can't enjoy it.

The puppy is probably the cutest thing since kittens were invented and he has some absoluletly hilarious scenes involving Kung Fu and poop. Somehow the directior has used the ol' toiletn humour and gotten away with it without it seeming crass.

Another thing the film did well was the ending. I was wondering how they were going to wrap things up, but they did it extremely well, involving all the characters in a non-cheesy/corny ending. I can't think of a better way to end it, so top marks for that.

In conclusion, it was a great comedy/family film which is suitable for everybody, and something that everybody will enjoy. I strongly recommend CJ7.

General Games/Television: Battlefield 2142 and Dexter

I've been playing alot of BF2142 recently, and I keep coming across an incredibly annoying bug. I like being a Squad Leader, mainly because you get a whoe bunch of free points, but sometimes when I spawn, I spawn as an unassigned, meaning that I'm no longer part of my squad. I join my squad again, but I can't be a squad leader. So I'm gonna consult EA/Dice about it.

If you have BF2142, add me to your buddy list: Avengerofdoom (It's a crap name I know, but I've had it forever, and I am not going to give up my fully unlocked recon kit)

I've also been watching Season 1 of Dexter, and I must remember to put up a review of such an amazing show.

On the topic of the website, I've updated the links page and I'm hoping to have a link put for Joe's Blog on some other sites, which would be plain awesome. (hint hint)

General Films: I cannot do Horror

After my Dad tricked me into watching half of The Orphanage, I have realised that I am a chicken when it comes to horror. Even when I know something is going to happen, when it does I leap out of my seat, through the roof and go up somewhere close to the stratospehere. So.... I basically won't watch horrors from now on.

Also, it turns out I have dandruff, two mouth ulcers, and my PC doesn't has a firewire port for my camcorder.

Great.

General Games: An update

Hey everybody! I haven't put a message up for a while, so here goes. I'm on the last level of Dark Messiah, and sadly Ubisoft have flooded the last levels with waves after waves of annoying enemies, and the only way you can defeat them is by using a staff and constantly retreating.

I dug up Battlefield 2142, and one of my gaming pals joined me. I drive the heli, he shoots. It's a pretty good team. I might even put a review up.

I've got plenty of disco music now, but I can't find the elusive Rock the Boat. Ah well. I'd like some feedback about my blog, so please leave comments.

Joe out.

General Book and Games: Finishing and Starting

Well, yesterday I finished an amazing book called The Confederacy of Dunces. It is an amazing book, filled with humour, wonderful and believable characters, and a story that begins with many different parts and ends in one magnificent whole. The main character is called Ignatius J. Reilly, and is possibly my favourite litererary character ever. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone.

I also recently began a game called Dark Messiah Might and Magic, based on the review on 1fort.com . It is way better than Oblivion in combat, magic and stealth, but somewhat fails in the storyline. The action is great. You start off with nothing but a sword, your legs and a throwing arm. If you use these correctly, they're you're strongest weapons. Dark Messiah introduces a fighting system where you can pick up random clutter like chairs, crates and barrels and hurl them at your enemy. If you hit them square-on, you can move in for the fatal stab while they're on the floor. Or, like I do, you can kick them hard, sending them flying off cliffs, balconies and into less desirable places (zombie pit). This is ridiculously fun, and makes it seem far more realistic. In a fight, when 4 orcs have you cornered and you have nothing but an arrow and a bow, and you put your arrow in a nearby fire then stab an enemy with it, while kicking the others off, then grabbing the killed enemy's sword and proceeding on to kill the other 3, you feel awesome.

The magic too, is excellent, with you being able to shoot flames, freeze enemies, and place devious traps. The stealth is ok, but sometimes the enemy will spot you even when you're in the deepest shadows. But what I really love are the animations and attacks. Pressing 9 for me will make my character whip out two daggers then twirl them around. Pressing 2 will make me pull out my favourite weapon; the wooden staff. It's basically a blunt stick, but perfect for fighting groups as you'll be able to take several down with only a few swipes.

So far there has only been 1 amazing level, where you jump and leap across rooftops on a rainy night, tracking down a weird dog person who stole a crystal. You leap from building to building, grabbing ropes and pulling yourself up, slicing at your target with daggers but missing by only a centimetre, the whole time having a chase music track play in the background.

So far, so good, but my full verdict will be out when I finish it.

P.S. The multiplayer is crap, there are about 3 servers up right now.

General Games: Steam Rating

Just a short post. My steam rating is 10!!! WOOT!!

General Games: Disco Music and Wikihow

My search for disco music continues! I have added:

  • Disco Inferno
  • Rock the Boat
  • Love lift us up
  • We are family
  • Superstition
  • Saturday Night Fever
  • Love will keep us together

On an unrelated note, have any of you been on WikiHow? It is both ridiculous and amazing. Articles range from 'how to breed red cherry shrimp' to 'how to be liked' to 'how to kill a ranger in the duel arena in Runescape'. Yeah. You read that right. And, of couse there's my favourite. 'How to survive a nuclear war'. Here's a tip:

Consume Potassium Iodide. This will save your thyroid from radiation.

I'm wordless, really. If you want to read some of my favourites, here are the links:

In fact, these are so funny, in the future, I might put a link to one at the end of each of my posts.

Film Review: 3:10 to Yuma

Well, if you feel like there hasn't been a decent action film in ages and hoping this will be one, don't read this review, you'll just be disappointed. If you feel that there hasn't been an amazing action film in ages, then read on. This film is amazing for those with an appetite for bullets and the Wild West™.

What makes it special is the sense of power you get from the guns the main characters weild. The sound effects are amazing with some of the best gunshots I've ever heard. Even Counter Strike's audio is feeble by comparison.

The storyline and acting are good too, but they aren't the main thing about this. 3:10 to Yuma is for those who want the ending of a film to be 15 minutes of non-stop shooting and explosions. For those who want to see a townful of men with guns taking on a father and his son. For those who like gatling guns and dynamite.

3:10 will grip you from start to finish. Watch it.

Film Review: 10,00 BC

A phone call from my friend on Friday resulted in us deciding to see 10,00 BC. I asked my friend what it was about, to which he replied 'these cavemen have to get past these animals or something'. Which I guess is kinda true. Except those animals are giant, human-eating OSTRICHES!!

It's actually about a tribe who are enslaved, but three men set out to rescue them, fulfilling a prophecy yadda yadda yadda. You get the idea. It's an action/adventure film, but the action is lacklustre and not nearly brutal enough. Go see 3:10 to Yuma. Now that's what I call action.

I won't spoil the story, but it spreads from mountains to jungles to deserts, with a big battle at the end. A big, somewhat entertaining, yet still boring in parts, battle. And of course there's an element of crappily-acted romance.

On the brighter side, the production design and costume/make-up was very good and believable. The special effects were ok, but didn't blow me away like I had hoped. And the director has succumbed to that super close-up style, where you can't really see any of the action, but some sticks hitting each other.

So overall, I wasn't impressed. If you're looking for the next great action movie, this isn't it. If you're looking for a lite, action/adventure that you can take you're kids too, this is it.

The template for reviews and thoughts

Well, I've devised a system for categorising my posts so you can look through them more easily. For the title of each post I will write Film Review/Game Review/General Films/General Games. The first two are obviously reviews, the last two will be for my general thoughts and news. I am also working on the podcasts, but I only have a £3 microphone, so they may not be of best quality. Anyway, I also intend to make a page of links to websites and other blogs.

Great recent films and games

There have been a lot of great recent films out lately, many of which I intend to review soon. My favourite has got to be No Country for Old Men, the direction and acting by Javier Bardem were superb. Another was Sweeney Todd, which was also excellent, but had one or two problems, which will be mentioned in my upcoming review.

There has also been a huge number of excellent games that have come out recently, including The Orange Box and Call of Duty 4.

In website news, I'm trying to figure out a way to get posts such as this one into categories such as film and games, but its a bit diificult, and Mr. Site have been no help whatsoever. Anyhoo, keep tuned.

Joe

Huzzah! My blog is done (kinda).

Well, I'm using this Mr. Site thingy to make this blog, and it's still in beta, so don't get too disgusted by the look of it. I'm still playing around with tools, but will be done soon.
